Marvel Studios is leaning heavily into nostalgia with the latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, confirming the return of several original X-Men characters from the 2000 film era. The new footage showcases a dramatic and emotional callback to Marvel’s early cinematic roots, including a haunting glimpse of a destroyed X-Mansion. The trailer, which recently completed a theatrical run before being released more widely, continues Marvel’s slow rollout strategy. While previous previews highlighted moments from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this latest installment shifts focus squarely to the franchise that helped define modern superhero cinema.
The footage confirms that Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), and James Marsden (Cyclops) will reprise their roles from X-Men. In one of the trailer’s most striking moments, the camera pans slowly across the ruins of the iconic X-Mansion. The sequence is underscored by a chilling voiceover from Professor X, who warns, “Death comes for us all.” The scene signals a darker tone and suggests significant stakes for mutantkind within the MCU.
Eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed visual details designed to evoke the original films and the source comics. Professor X is seen wearing a jacket emblazoned with a bold X logo, while Cyclops appears in a blue-and-yellow suit closely resembling his classic comic-book look. The trailer’s final moments feature Cyclops unleashing a powerful optic blast, reinforcing the character’s return as a central figure rather than a cameo. Magneto’s presence, meanwhile, marks Ian McKellen’s first return to the role since X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The X-Men reveal adds to a growing list of major returns already confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel has previously announced that Chris Evans will return as Steve Rogers and Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor. The studio has also generated headlines by bringing Robert Downey Jr. back into the franchise as Doctor Doom, despite his character’s death in Avengers: Endgame. Together, these returns suggest Doomsday is positioning itself as one of Marvel’s most ambitious crossover events to date.
While several familiar faces are confirmed, not all original X-Men actors will appear. Additional returns include Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast). However, Famke Janssen, who portrayed Jean Grey/Phoenix in the original trilogy, has said Marvel never approached her for involvement. Sophie Turner, who later played the character in the rebooted films, has not confirmed whether she appears in Doomsday.
Marvel is expected to release more trailers throughout the year as anticipation builds. Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to hit theatres on December 18, 2026. With legacy characters, ruined landmarks, and ominous warnings, the film appears set to blend nostalgia with high-stakes storytelling—bringing the original X-Men firmly into the MCU’s future.
