Oscars 2026: White House Slams Jimmy Kimmel Over Trump Jokes

The 98th Academy Awards were not without controversy. Jimmy Kimmel, presenting the documentary categories, joked about President Donald Trump’s frustration over Melania Trump’s documentary failing to earn a nomination. He quipped: “Oh man, is he going to be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this.”

Kimmel also poked fun at media consolidation, saying: “There are some countries whose leaders don’t support free speech. I’m not at liberty to say which. Let’s just leave it at North Korea and CBS.” His sharp remarks drew laughter from the Hollywood crowd but sparked backlash from the Trump administration.

White House Response

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung quickly fired back, calling Kimmel a “classless hack” and accusing him of projecting “depression and sadness.” Cheung’s statement, shared online, dismissed Kimmel as irrelevant outside of Hollywood elites.

The administration’s anger centered on Kimmel’s repeated digs at Melania Trump’s documentary Melania, which critics widely panned and which failed to recoup its reported $75 million budget.

Kimmel’s Continued Mockery

Kimmel has not shied away from mocking Trump and Melania. He previously joked: “Between this and ‘Sinners’ it’s been a big year for vampire movies.” He added that Melania “never cared much about optics” and “can’t even pronounce optics.”

Despite past threats from the administration and a temporary suspension of his show, Kimmel has continued to lampoon Trump, making the Oscars stage another platform for his biting humor.

A Clash of Politics and Entertainment

The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between Hollywood and the Trump administration. While Kimmel’s jokes landed with the Oscars audience, the White House’s fiery response ensured the moment became one of the most talked-about political flashpoints of the night.
