Patrick Dempsey Gives Heartbreaking Update on Eric Dane Amid ALS Battle

Patrick Dempsey has shared a poignant update about his former Grey’s Anatomy co-star Eric Dane, who is currently battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The actor revealed that it was “virtually impossible” to include Dane in his new Fox thriller series Memory of a Killer due to the progression of the disease.

Eric Dane’s ALS Diagnosis

Dane, 53, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The condition gradually weakens muscles, impacting mobility, speech, and daily functioning. Despite the challenges, Dane has remained open about his journey, even portraying an ALS patient in NBC’s Brilliant Minds last November.

Dempsey’s Emotional Words

During an interview with Parade, Dempsey, 60, spoke about staying in touch with his friend and former colleague. “I spoke to him a few weeks ago. I’ve been texting with him. We were trying to get him in [Memory of a Killer],” he said. “Unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible. But I was happy to see that he was here in Toronto working on another medical drama.” Dempsey praised Dane’s courage, describing him as “a wonderful human being” with intelligence and humor. He admitted that watching the disease’s impact has been “heartbreaking” but emphasized Dane’s resilience and positivity.

Family Support and Care Challenges

Dane’s wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, recently revealed that he is receiving round-the-clock care with nurses by his side 24/7. In an essay for The Cut, she shared her struggles with insurance companies to secure approval for full-time care. After multiple appeals, she succeeded, ensuring Dane receives the support he needs. The couple, who share two daughters, have leaned on family and medical professionals to navigate the challenges of ALS. Gayheart’s determination highlights the difficulties many families face when advocating for loved ones with chronic illnesses.

Dane’s Determination to Keep Working

Despite his diagnosis, Dane has expressed his desire to continue acting. In a June interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, he said: “At the end of the day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can. I don’t think this is the end of my story.” He revealed that his right side was no longer functioning and anticipated losing control of his left hand. Still, his words reflected hope and strength, underscoring his commitment to living fully despite the disease.

A Legacy of Friendship and Courage

Dempsey and Dane worked together for six seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, where their characters became fan favorites. Their enduring friendship continues off-screen, with Dempsey offering support and admiration for Dane’s bravery. As Dane faces the challenges of ALS, his openness and resilience serve as inspiration to fans and fellow actors alike.
