Peaky Blinders Movie Ending Explained — How It Sets Up Netflix Spinoff

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man marks the final chapter of Tommy Shelby’s story, closing out one of television’s most iconic sagas while laying the groundwork for Netflix’s upcoming spinoff series.

Tommy’s Return

Set during World War II, the film finds Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) living in isolation, writing his memoirs. His quiet life ends when Ada brings news of a Nazi-backed plot in Birmingham. Meanwhile, his estranged son Duke (Barry Keoghan) has taken control of the Peaky Blinders, aligning with collaborator John Beckett (Tim Roth) in a counterfeit money scheme designed to destabilize Europe.

Family Conflict

Duke’s hunger for power puts him at odds with Ada, who secretly builds a case against him. When Beckett orders Duke to kill her, he refuses, leading Beckett to shoot Ada himself. Tommy returns to Birmingham, sparking a brutal confrontation with his son.

The Final Battle

At Liverpool’s Waterloo Dock, Tommy teams up with Hayden Stagg (Stephen Graham) to stop Beckett. Duke betrays Beckett from within, helping dismantle the operation. Gravely wounded, Tommy asks Duke to end his life. In an emotional moment, Duke grants his father’s wish. Tommy’s final words, “In the bleak midwinter,” echo the haunting poetry that defined his journey.

A Poetic Farewell

The film closes with Tommy’s funeral and a reading of his will, reflecting on a life spent chasing power but defined by family. His last request — to burn his body and let the ash scatter — symbolizes freedom. Duke honors this by burning the caravan carrying Tommy’s body along with the counterfeit money, stepping into his role as the new leader of the Peaky Blinders.

Setting Up the Spinoff

With Duke now in charge, the story shifts to a new generation. Netflix’s sequel series will be set in the 1950s, exploring Birmingham’s rise from the ashes of the Blitz. Showrunner Steven Knight confirmed two seasons are planned, each with six episodes, promising a fresh yet familiar continuation of the Shelby legacy. Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man delivers closure for Tommy while opening the door to a new era of power, betrayal, and survival.
