Prime Video is diving deep into mythology with its upcoming God of War series, bringing one of PlayStation’s most iconic franchises to life. With Ryan Hurst confirmed as Kratos, fans are eager to see how the streamer will adapt the brutal yet emotional saga for television.
In December 2022, Prime Video officially greenlit the series based on God of War, a franchise that has spanned nearly two decades. Known for its visceral combat and mythological storytelling, the games follow Kratos, a Spartan warrior who makes a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek god of war. The show will focus on the two most recent installments — God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök (2022).
According to the official logline, the series will follow Kratos and his son Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. Along the way, Kratos struggles to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human. This father‑son dynamic is expected to be the emotional core of the series, echoing the heartfelt tone of the games. Showrunner Ronald D. Moore, best known for Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek, has promised to “emulate the tone of the game” while exploring Kratos’ mysterious past and his emotional struggles.
The biggest casting news came in January 2026, when Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst was announced as Kratos. Hurst already has ties to the franchise, having voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarök, a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination. Casting for Atreus and other iconic characters is still underway, but Moore has emphasized that Atreus will play a central role in the adaptation.
Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy‑winning director known for Shōgun, The Good Wife, and Prime Video’s Fallout, will helm the first two episodes. His experience with both drama and game adaptations positions him well to capture the epic scale of God of War. Production is set to begin in Vancouver, British Columbia, in March 2026. Prime Video has already committed to a two‑season order, signaling confidence in the project’s potential.
While no official release date has been announced, anticipation is high. With pre‑production underway and casting still in progress, fans may need to wait until late 2026 or beyond to see Kratos and Atreus on screen.
The series will stream exclusively on Prime Video, joining the platform’s growing lineup of video game adaptations, including Fallout.
