Rare Superman Comic Sells for $9.12M, Breaks Auction Record

A rare first edition of Superman No. 1, discovered in a family attic, has sold for a record-breaking $9.12 million (€7.9m) at auction in Texas. The sale makes it the most expensive comic book ever sold, surpassing the previous record held by Action Comics #1, which fetched $6 million last year.

Discovery in a Family Attic

Three brothers found the comic in a cardboard box beneath newspapers and cobwebs in their late mother’s San Francisco home. She had told them about a valuable collection, but they only uncovered it when preparing the house for sale. Alongside Superman No. 1, they found other rare comics collected before World War II.

Heritage Auctions Confirms the Find

Lon Allen, vice president of comics at Heritage Auctions, inspected the copy and confirmed its authenticity. “It was just in an attic, sitting in a box, could have easily been thrown away, could’ve easily been destroyed in a thousand different ways,” Allen said.

Preservation and Rarity

Released in 1939 by Detective Comics Inc., Superman No. 1 is one of only a few hundred surviving copies. Experts identified it as part of the first edition of 500,000 prints thanks to a small in-house advertisement.

Despite lacking protective casing, the cool Northern Californian climate preserved the comic’s firm spine, vibrant colors, and crisp corners. It was graded 9.0 out of 10 by CGC, indicating minimal wear.

A Family Treasure

The brothers, aged in their 50s and 60s, chose to remain anonymous, as did the buyer. In a statement, one brother reflected: “This isn’t simply a story about old paper and ink. This was never just about a collectible. This is a testament to memory, family and the unexpected ways the past finds its way back to us.”

A Historic Auction

The sale underscores the enduring cultural impact of Superman and the growing demand for rare comics. With fewer than 500 copies believed to exist, Superman No. 1 has cemented its place as a crown jewel in comic book history.
