Robert Aramayo delivered one of the most emotional moments at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards when he was named Best Actor in a Leading Role. The ceremony, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, saw the English actor triumph over Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Timothée Chalamet, Jesse Plemons, and Michael B. Jordan. Aramayo won for his portrayal of John Davidson, a Scottish man living with severe Tourette syndrome, in Kirk Jones’s biographical drama I Swear.
Visibly stunned, Aramayo told the audience: “I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award. Everyone in this category blows me away.” He singled out DiCaprio, saying he could hardly believe he was in the same category as him. Aramayo also recalled a formative moment from his time at Juilliard, when Ethan Hawke visited to speak about longevity in acting. “To be in this category with you tonight is incredible,” he said, thanking Hawke directly.
Earlier in the evening, Aramayo also won the EE Rising Star Award, voted for by the public. His double win marked a career‑defining night for the 33‑year‑old actor, who is also known for his role in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
John Davidson, whose life inspired I Swear, attended the ceremony to support the film. After Aramayo’s Rising Star win, host Alan Cumming addressed the audience, apologizing for strong language heard during the event. He explained that Tourette’s syndrome causes involuntary verbal tics, reminding viewers that the language was not intentional. Variety later reported that Davidson left the ceremony of his own accord during the second half.
Aramayo’s BAFTA triumph cements his place among the most promising talents in British cinema. His performance in I Swear has been praised for its sensitivity and depth, and his wins signal a bright future on both sides of the Atlantic.
