Phil Collins, Pink, and Shakira Among Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nominees

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its latest list of nominees, featuring a mix of legendary performers and first-time contenders. Phil Collins, Pink, and Shakira are among the 17 artists shortlisted for induction this year, alongside Oasis, Mariah Carey, Wu-Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill, and Jeff Buckley.

First-Time Nominees

Several artists are appearing on the ballot for the first time. These include Phil Collins, recognized for his solo career after being inducted with Genesis in 2010; Pink, now eligible 26 years after her debut single; Shakira, who could become one of the few Latin American musicians honored; Lauryn Hill; Luther Vandross; Melissa Etheridge; INXS; New Edition; and Wu-Tang Clan, the only hip-hop act nominated this year.

Returning Contenders

Other nominees have been considered before. Oasis, Mariah Carey, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, The Black Crowes, and Sade are all back on the list. Carey, nominated for the third consecutive year, hopes this time will be her breakthrough. Oasis, meanwhile, continues to spark debate, with Liam Gallagher famously dismissing the Hall of Fame’s relevance.

Phil Collins’ Journey

Collins, 75, is a standout nominee. Known for hits like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds, his music has found new audiences in recent years. Despite health struggles—including multiple surgeries and a need for a live-in nurse—Collins has expressed interest in returning to the studio. His nomination highlights both his enduring influence and resilience.

Shakira’s Global Impact

Shakira’s nomination is particularly significant. Latin American representation in the Hall of Fame remains rare, with only three inductees out of more than 1,000 born in the region. Her inclusion reflects her global success and cultural impact, from Whenever, Wherever to Hips Don’t Lie.

Wu-Tang Clan and Hip-Hop Debate

Wu-Tang Clan’s nomination comes amid ongoing debate about hip-hop’s place in the Hall of Fame. Kiss bassist Gene Simmons recently criticized the inclusion of rap artists, but Wu-Tang’s influence on music and culture makes them a strong contender.

What Happens Next

A panel of voters will select between six and eight inductees from the list. The final names will be revealed in April, with the induction ceremony scheduled for autumn in Cleveland, Ohio.
