Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Black Panther and the Oscar-nominated Sinners, is bringing back one of television’s most iconic sci-fi dramas. Hulu has officially green-lit a pilot for a new version of The X-Files, with Coogler set to write and direct.
According to reports, the reboot will center on two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond while investigating unexplained phenomena. The division they join has long been shuttered, setting the stage for new mysteries and conspiracies. Danielle Deadwyler, known for her roles in Euphoria, Till, and The Piano Lesson, will lead the series. No other casting has been announced yet, but her involvement signals a bold new direction for the franchise.
The original creator of The X-Files, Chris Carter, will serve as executive producer on the reboot. Carter’s involvement ensures continuity with the beloved series, which originally ran from 1993 to 2002 and starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The show was previously revived for two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018.
Coogler’s latest project comes as his film Sinners racks up a record-setting 16 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. His ability to blend genre storytelling with cultural resonance has made him one of Hollywood’s most sought-after creators. With Hulu backing the revival, fans can expect a modernized take on The X-Files that honors its legacy while introducing new characters and storylines.
