Sam Rockwell Opens Up About Grueling Costume in Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die

Oscar-winning actor Sam Rockwell has revealed that filming his latest movie, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, came with unexpected challenges—particularly his heavy costume.

A Suit Too Heavy to Handle

In the time-travel action-adventure-comedy, Rockwell plays a man from the future who enters a Los Angeles diner on a mission to save humanity from AI and phone addiction. His character wears a transparent plastic raincoat layered over a suicide bomb-style vest packed with devices, tubes, and wires. The actor admitted the outfit was far from comfortable. “I was so miserable… I’d have to sit most of the days because it was so heavy,” Rockwell told Metro. The suit weighed nearly 40 pounds (18 kilograms), making long shooting days in Cape Town, South Africa, particularly difficult. “Nothing could prepare me for the suit. It was the low-budget version. It wasn’t the one that Tom Cruise would have worn!” he joked.

Director’s Praise

Despite the discomfort, director Gore Verbinski praised Rockwell’s dedication. “I’ve worked with Michael Caine, Chris Walken, Gene Hackman, Johnny Depp… and now I get to say I’ve worked with Sam Rockwell. He does the f**king work,” Verbinski said.

A Different Kind of Action Film

Rockwell described the movie as a “talkie action” film, emphasizing dialogue and character-driven moments rather than traditional fight sequences. The ensemble cast includes Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, Asim Chaudhry, and Juno Temple. The actor noted that audiences may prefer seeing him in quirky roles rather than straightforward action. “I’ve already tried, and I don’t know if people are into it. I did Argylle and a couple other ones. So maybe people don’t want to see me that way. I think they want to see me in a goofy suit with a beard,” he said.

Release Details

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is already playing in U.S. cinemas and will open in the U.K. on Friday. With its mix of humor, sci-fi themes, and Rockwell’s unique performance, the film aims to stand out in the crowded action-adventure genre.
