Sarah Ferguson, widely known as “Fergie,” has long been a prominent figure in British public life. The former Duchess of York was married to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor — previously Prince Andrew, Duke of York — from 1986 until their divorce in 1996.
Born in 1959, Ferguson is the daughter of retired army major Ronald Ferguson, who served as polo manager for King Charles. She grew up in close proximity to the royal family and was introduced to Andrew by her childhood friend Princess Diana. Their romance blossomed quickly, leading to an engagement in March 1986 and a wedding at Westminster Abbey that July.
The couple’s wedding was attended by dignitaries including U.S. First Lady Nancy Reagan. Upon marriage, Andrew was granted the Duke of York title, traditionally reserved for the monarch’s second son. Together, Ferguson and Andrew had two daughters: Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
Though their marriage ended in 1996, Ferguson and Andrew remained close. They continued to live together at times and often appeared publicly as a family. In interviews, Andrew described their relationship as one of enduring friendship, strengthened by their shared commitment to their children.
After leaving royal life, Ferguson built a career in media, publishing, and philanthropy. She has written books, appeared on television, and supported numerous charitable causes. She has also faced financial challenges and controversies, including recent reports that six companies linked to her are being shut down following the release of Epstein-related files.
Ferguson has also been candid about her health. In 2023, she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and underwent surgery. Months later, she revealed she was being treated for skin cancer. By mid-2024, her daughter Princess Beatrice confirmed she was “all clear” and thriving at age 64.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has faced intense scrutiny over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. In 2025, Buckingham Palace stripped him of his royal titles and honors, leaving him simply Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Ferguson publicly supported him during earlier scandals, calling him a “principled man,” though she has not commented on his recent arrest.
At 66, Ferguson remains active in philanthropy and public life. She continues to use the Duchess of York title in some contexts, though professionally she goes by her own name. Her daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, are married with children, ensuring Ferguson’s ongoing presence in the extended royal family.
