The New York Jets’ decision to trade cornerback Sauce Gardner has raised eyebrows across the league, especially after signing him to a record-setting extension earlier this year. In June, Gardner agreed to a four-year deal averaging $30.1 million annually, making him the highest-paid player at his position. Despite the blockbuster trade to the Indianapolis Colts, the Jets will absorb only a modest cap hit due to the structure of the contract. The move also netted New York two first-round picks and wide receiver AD Mitchell, positioning the team for future roster flexibility.
The Jets traded Sauce Gardner to the Colts in early November 2025, just months after extending him through 2029. The deal included a $13.75 million signing bonus and a $1.25 million salary for 2025, which the Jets have already paid. The remaining financial obligations — including $25.5 million starting in 2026 — will be covered by Indianapolis. Because the trade occurred after June 1, the Jets avoid additional 2025 cap charges and will carry only $11 million in 2026, including acceleration.
The trade allows the Jets to offload a high-value contract while securing premium draft capital.
NFL insider Mike Florio noted, “The Jets structured Gardner’s deal in a way that made this trade financially viable. It’s a rare case of a team maximizing flexibility post-extension.” Team sources suggest the move was part of a broader strategy to reset the roster and build around younger assets. Colts GM Chris Ballard praised Gardner’s elite coverage skills, calling him “a foundational piece for our secondary.”
The Jets’ secondary will undergo a transition, but the addition of AD Mitchell bolsters their receiving corps. With two extra first-round picks, New York gains leverage in the 2026 draft. The manageable cap hit ensures the team retains spending power for free agency. Gardner’s departure marks a shift in defensive identity, but the trade aligns with long-term planning.
Gardner is expected to debut for the Colts in Week 11 against the Titans. The Jets will focus on integrating Mitchell into their offense and evaluating cornerback depth. Draft preparations begin early, with scouts targeting defensive backs and offensive linemen. No further trades are expected before the deadline.
