Sean Baker, acclaimed filmmaker behind The Florida Project and Red Rocket, has been officially appointed as jury president for the fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. The festival will take place from December 4 to 13, 2025, in Jeddah, bringing together global filmmakers, industry leaders, and emerging voices in cinema.
The announcement positions Baker as a central figure in one of the fastest-growing film events in the Middle East, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s ongoing investment in its cultural and entertainment sectors.
The Red Sea Film Festival has quickly become a key stop on the international film circuit since its inception in 2019. With a focus on amplifying voices from the Arab world, Africa, and Asia, the festival features competitive categories spanning fiction, documentary, and short films.
Baker’s role as jury president means he will lead the panel responsible for selecting the Golden Yusr Award winner — the festival’s top honor for best feature film. Known for his authentic storytelling and ability to capture marginalized voices, Baker brings a unique creative perspective to this prestigious post.
Industry insiders have praised the choice, noting Baker’s distinct blend of indie filmmaking and global sensibility. Mohammed Al-Turki, CEO of the Red Sea Film Foundation, commented:
“Sean Baker represents the heart of independent cinema. His storytelling reflects humanity with depth and compassion — values that resonate strongly with the Red Sea Festival’s mission.”
Film critic Laila Al-Fahad added that Baker’s appointment “signals the festival’s growing alignment with international standards of artistic excellence.”
Baker’s leadership marks another milestone in Saudi Arabia’s rapid cultural evolution. Over the past five years, the kingdom has positioned itself as a new hub for creative collaboration, hosting major premieres and attracting world-class talent.
His involvement could enhance global interest in Red Sea 2025, drawing attention from both Hollywood and independent filmmakers. It also underscores the festival’s ambition to establish a sustainable, internationally recognized platform for regional cinema.
The 2025 Red Sea Film Festival will feature over 100 films from more than 50 countries, alongside workshops, panel discussions, and industry networking sessions under the Red Sea Souk Market.
Sean Baker and his jury are expected to reveal the award winners at the closing ceremony on December 13, 2025. Full programming details, including guest of honor announcements and special screenings, will be released later this month.
