SNL Ends 2025 With Trump ‘Wicked’ Joke, Bowen Yang Farewell and Ariana Grande Hosting

Saturday Night Live wrapped its final episode of 2025 this weekend, delivering a cold open filled with political satire and a surprising Broadway punchline. The live sketch comedy show welcomed singer and actress Ariana Grande as host, with music icon Cher joining as the musical guest. This episode marked Grande’s third time hosting and her fifth appearance overall. Grande stars as Elphaba in the upcoming Wicked film adaptation, and her return sparked excitement among fans.

The night was also emotional. NBC confirmed that longtime cast member Bowen Yang would be exiting the show. Yang joined SNL in 2019 and quickly became known for his memorable impressions and original characters. His departure had been announced earlier in the week, and this episode served as his farewell performance.

Trump cold open tackles holiday politics

The show opened with James Austin Johnson reprising his role as former President Donald Trump. The sketch depicted Trump delivering a holiday address from the White House. The impersonation referenced major headlines, including the economy, the newly released redacted Epstein files and recent political controversies.

The sketch drew laughter when Johnson referenced the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., where Trump’s name has reportedly been added to the complex. The monologue escalated as Johnson, in character, joked about renaming other national monuments.

“I’m actually going to be renaming a number of our other monuments as well,” he joked. “Trump-Washington Monument, Trump-Lincoln Memorial and of course, Big Elphaba,” he said, flashing an edited image of the Statue of Liberty in Wicked-themed green.

The play on Elphaba — the fictional witch Grande portrays — landed well with the studio audience. Viewers online reacted quickly, sending the clip viral as conversations blended pop culture, musical theatre and political satire.

Looking ahead to 2026

NBC announced that Saturday Night Live will return with new episodes on January 17, 2026. Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard will host, while rapper A$AP Rocky is slated to perform as the musical guest. The pairing is already trending among fans who anticipate a strong winter return lineup. SNL’s holiday season finale balanced familiar political lampooning with emotional farewells and high-profile celebrity appearances. With Yang leaving and new hosts scheduled, the upcoming season promises new comedic dynamics and continued cultural impact.

As 2025 closes, the show reinforces its legacy of blending satire, social commentary and topical humor. This weekend’s “Wicked” twist was a reminder that SNL’s political jokes continue to adapt with popular culture — even when aimed at landmarks, Presidents and Broadway witches.
