Sosie Bacon Reflects on First Film With Dad Kevin and New Family Project

Sosie Bacon is looking back at her first-ever acting role — and ahead to her latest family collaboration. The actress, now 34, recalled working with her father Kevin Bacon on the 2005 drama Loverboy, where she played a younger version of her mother, Kyra Sedgwick. Kevin directed and starred in the film, marking Sosie’s debut at just 11 years old.

Sosie’s First Role

Speaking at the premiere of Family Movie at SXSW on March 13, Sosie admitted she was initially hesitant to join Loverboy. “I was like, ‘I’m not doing that movie. Thanks for the offer. I’m good. I want to stay in school. I’m 11,’” she remembered. But Kevin convinced her, and she ultimately enjoyed the experience. “He’s great to work with. They both are. They’re very respectful of your own process as an actor,” she said of her parents.

A Family Reunion On-Screen

Two decades later, Sosie reunited with her parents and brother Travis Bacon for Family Movie, a horror-comedy that premiered at SXSW. The film follows a filmmaking family who stumble into a real-life horror scenario when a body is discovered on the set of their slasher film. Kevin returned to the director’s chair for the first time in nearly 20 years, co-directing with Sedgwick. “It was a pretty familiar place to step back into,” Kevin said, praising Sedgwick’s support during production.

Writing the Script

Sosie explained that writer Dan Beers captured the family’s dynamic perfectly after meeting with each member individually. “We read the script and were like, ‘Oh my God, this is so accurate,’” she said. The project was pitched as a comedy-horror blend, and the family quickly embraced the idea of working together.

Looking Ahead

While Family Movie does not yet have a theatrical release date, the SXSW premiere marked a milestone for the Bacon-Sedgwick family. For Sosie, the project represents both a nostalgic return to her roots and a new chapter in her career, proving that family collaborations can be both meaningful and creatively rewarding.
