Spice Girls Honored with Royal Mint Coin Celebrating 30 Years

The Spice Girls are being immortalized in a new way — on official currency. The Royal Mint has unveiled a commemorative coin celebrating 30 years since the group’s debut, marking a milestone for the iconic pop band and their enduring message of “girl power.”

A Tribute to Their Debut

The £5 collectable coin honors the release of their first single Wannabe and debut album Spice, both launched in 1996. Designed by artist Ffion Rees, the coin features silhouettes of all five original members — Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell-Horner, and Melanie Brown — alongside their autographs.

Limited Edition Designs

In a first for the Royal Mint’s “music legends” series, five different packaging designs are available, each highlighting one member of the group. Only 15,000 coins of each design will be released worldwide, making them highly collectible. Prices range from £18.50 for uncirculated versions to £10,535 for a 2oz gold proof £200 coin.

Spice Girls React

The band expressed their excitement in a statement: “It’s a huge honour for us to be celebrated by the Royal Mint. We could never have imagined that we would be recognised in this way – the first female group to be given their very own coin… what a moment for girl power.”

Defining Pop Culture

The Spice Girls dominated the late 1990s with chart-topping hits including 2 Become 1, Spice Up Your Life, and Viva Forever. Their bold personalities and empowering mantra made them cultural icons, even leading to their 1997 film Spice World.

Continuing the Music Legends Series

The Royal Mint’s “music legends” collection has previously honored Freddie Mercury, Elton John, David Bowie, George Michael, Dame Shirley Bassey, and Paul McCartney. With the Spice Girls now joining the lineup, the series celebrates their lasting impact on pop culture.

Lucy Mackenzie of the Royal Mint summed it up: “The Spice Girls didn’t just dominate pop music, they defined the 90s… girl power is back.”
