Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the influential bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died at age 63. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 20, 2025, following respiratory complications caused by emphysema. The announcement comes weeks after initial reports of his death, with the family now publicly sharing the cause.
Mani’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from musicians, fans, and public figures across the UK, underscoring his status as one of British rock’s most defining bassists.
Family members told the Manchester Evening News that Mani died at his home in Heaton Moor, Stockport, after a rapid decline linked to a chronic lung condition. Paramedics were called on the morning of November 20, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the circumstances were non‑suspicious, and no coroner investigation was required.
His death comes nearly two years after the passing of his wife, Imelda Mounfield, who died in November 2023 at age 50 following a battle with stage four bowel cancer. Mani is survived by their 13‑year‑old twin sons, Gene and George.
Mani joined The Stone Roses in 1987, becoming a central force in the band’s sound during its late‑’80s and early‑’90s rise. His melodic, driving bass lines helped define the group’s signature style and contributed to their status as one of Manchester’s most influential acts.
After the Roses’ initial split in 1996, Mani joined Primal Scream, playing on several of the band’s most acclaimed albums. He later reunited with The Stone Roses for their 2010s tours, cementing his legacy across two landmark British bands.
Despite his health challenges, Mani remained active in the music community. Shortly before his death, he had announced plans for a national speaking tour spanning more than 60 venues, demonstrating his continued engagement with fans.
The news of Mani’s cause of death prompted heartfelt tributes from peers and admirers:
Fans and fellow artists have celebrated his contributions to both The Stone Roses’ breakthrough and Primal Scream’s evolution, noting how his bass work shaped generations of musicians.
Mani’s funeral will take place on December 22 at Manchester Cathedral, followed by a private committal and wake. Attendance is by invitation only.
As the music community prepares to honor his life, Mani’s legacy continues through the groundbreaking work he created and the countless artists he inspired. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in British rock history, but his influence remains deeply embedded in the genre.
