Sturgill Simpson has surprised fans by releasing his new album Mutiny After Midnight two weeks ahead of schedule. Originally set for a March 13 release, the record appeared in full over the weekend on YouTube, making it the only digital platform where listeners can currently stream the project.
The album was announced last month under Simpson’s Johnny Blue Skies moniker. At the time, the singer said it would only be available on physical formats — vinyl, CD, and cassette. The early drop on YouTube marks a rare digital release for Simpson, who has often resisted traditional streaming platforms.
Mutiny After Midnight is Simpson’s ninth studio album and his second as Johnny Blue Skies, following 2024’s Passage du Desir. Recorded at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, the album features Simpson’s backing band, the Dark Clouds. He produced the record himself, continuing his reputation as a fiercely independent artist.
When announcing the album, Simpson explained that many of the songs were written spontaneously. “I wrote words to what is happening in the world and my life in real time, and played with a group of musicians I deeply love and respect,” he said. He described the project as “a dance record” meant to bring joy and “offer some relief from darkness in the world.”
The release also marks Simpson’s return to Atlantic Records, which previously issued his acclaimed 2016 album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. While his 2019 record Sound & Fury came out on Elektra, his most recent projects were released through his own High Top Mountain Records. Mutiny After Midnight is a joint release between High Top and Atlantic, signaling a renewed partnership with a major label.
For now, YouTube remains the only place fans can stream the album digitally. Whether it will expand to other platforms remains unclear, but the early release has already generated buzz among listeners eager to hear Simpson’s latest evolution.
