SXSW 2026: Jonás Cuarón and Edgar Barrera Spotlight Immigration Story in Campeón Gabacho

At SXSW 2026, filmmaker Jonás Cuarón and Latin music superproducer Edgar Barrera unveiled details about their upcoming film Campeón Gabacho. Speaking at Billboard House in Austin, the duo described the project as a culturally rich immigration tale blending reality, imagination, and music.

Barrera revealed that he had been hoping to pivot into film when Cuarón reached out. “Exactly one year ago, I told my wife I wanted to move into film and television. Five days later, Jonás called me,” he said. That call led to a collaboration that now features a star-studded cast including Leslie Grace, Rubén Blades, Rosario Dawson, Cheech Marin, and Eddie Marsan.

Inspired by Aura Xilonen’s Novel

The film is loosely based on Aura Xilonen’s 2015 debut novel, written when she was just 19. The book introduced “Ingleñol,” a hybrid language mixing English, Spanish, and invented words. Cuarón explained that the lyrical quality of the language made music a natural fit for the adaptation.

Story of Liborio

Campeón Gabacho follows Liborio, a Mexican immigrant who crosses the Rio Grande and struggles to build a life in New York City. Cuarón emphasized the importance of portraying immigrants as individuals rather than abstract concepts: “He’s just a teenager with dreams, in love. And I wanted audiences to see that richness.”

A Soundtrack With Activism

Barrera curated a soundtrack featuring over a dozen Latin artists, including Santa Fe Klan, Grupo Frontera, Rawayana, Bomba Estéreo, and Arcángel. Each song was written exclusively for the film, many addressing immigration directly. Barrera noted that protest songs about immigration are rare today, making this soundtrack a powerful statement. He recalled writing with Víctor Mendivil, who had just attended a march against ICE earlier that day. “He saw what was happening in the streets and brought that energy into the studio. It was perfect,” Barrera said.

A Blend of Hardship and Hope

While Liborio’s journey includes hardship and violence, Cuarón stressed that the film also carries humor and love. “Once he finds his community, he realizes that with their strength, he’s no longer going to stand alone,” he said.

Premiere at SXSW

The global debut of Campeón Gabacho is set for March 17 at the Zach Theater in Austin. With its mix of storytelling, activism, and music, the film is already being hailed as one of the most anticipated premieres of the festival.
