Sydney Sweeney’s latest project, The Housemaid, has found massive success on digital platforms following its theatrical release. The R-rated thriller debuted for purchase and rental on February 3, 2026, and within two days, it soared to the top of the iTunes chart, overtaking family blockbusters and franchise titles.
The film’s official account celebrated the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), posting: “Have you heard? #TheHousemaid is #1 on the @AppleTV Store!”
Adapted from Freida McFadden’s novel, The Housemaid premiered in theaters on December 19, 2025. Directed by Paul Feig and written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, the film was produced on a modest $35 million budget but went on to gross $310 million globally, cementing its place as one of Lionsgate’s standout releases.
The cast includes Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester, Michele Morrone as Enzo Accardi, and Elizabeth Perkins as Evelyn Perkins.
The Housemaid has been well-received by both critics and audiences. It currently holds a Certified Fresh score of 74% from critics and an impressive 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Viewers can rent the film for $19.99 or purchase it for $24.99 on Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube, and Fandango at Home. Lionsgate also plans to release the thriller on Starz in April 2026, expanding its reach to streaming subscribers.
Following the film’s success, Lionsgate has greenlit a sequel titled The Housemaid’s Secret. Sydney Sweeney will reprise her role as Millie, with Rebecca Sonnenshine returning to adapt the screenplay. Director Paul Feig is also set to continue with the franchise.
Freida McFadden’s follow-up novel, The Housemaid Is Watching (published in 2024), could serve as inspiration for future installments, though only the first sequel has been confirmed so far.
With The Housemaid dominating digital charts and a sequel already in development, Lionsgate appears poised to build a long-running franchise. As anticipation grows for The Housemaid’s Secret, the studio is expected to leverage the film’s strong box office and streaming performance to expand its reach even further.
