Allegedly: Tacoma Woman’s Shocking Death Ruled Homicide, Son Faces Murder Trial

Authorities have officially released the cause of death for a Tacoma woman whose son allegedly fatally stabbed her earlier this year.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that 64-year-old Mary Jane Stephens died from multiple sharp-force injuries, officially ruling her death a homicide.
Her son, 36-year-old Ronald Thomas Stephens, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her killing.
The incident occurred on April 18, 2025, at an apartment complex near the 1200 block of North Pearl Street in Tacoma, Washington.
Officials released the updated findings on Tuesday, providing new insight into a case that allegedly shocked the North Tacoma community.

Medical Examiner Confirms Cause of Death

According to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s updated report, Mary Jane Stephens sustained multiple stab wounds consistent with a violent attack.
The report confirms the death was intentional and classified as homicide.

Investigators allege that Ronald Stephens fatally stabbed his mother before attempting to mislead officers about the circumstances of her death.
Charging documents show Ronald called 911 at 8:52 a.m. on April 18, claiming he discovered his mother’s body after waking up to take his six-year-old niece to school.

When police arrived, Stephens was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at 9:11 a.m.
Initially, Ronald allegedly told police that his mother had taken her own life, but evidence at the scene contradicted that claim, prompting a homicide investigation.

Courtroom Developments and Legal Proceedings

During an arraignment on April 24, prosecutors argued the attack may have been premeditated.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dalton Smith stated in court that the suspect had “ample time and motive” leading up to the fatal encounter.

Ronald Stephens entered a plea of not guilty to the first-degree murder charge.
The judge set his bail at $1.5 million, citing the severity of the offense and public safety risks.
Court records confirm that Ronald remains in custody at the Pierce County Jail, with a trial scheduled for November 19, 2025.

Prosecutors have not disclosed a motive, though court filings indicate a history of family conflict.

Community Reaction and Broader Impact

The killing has deeply affected the North Tacoma community, where serious violent crimes are uncommon.
Neighbors described Mary Jane Stephens as a “kind, quiet woman” who had lived in the area for decades.

In the aftermath, residents have left flowers and candles near her apartment building.
Local advocacy groups have also emphasized the importance of domestic violence awareness and early intervention.

Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information to contact Tacoma Police investigators as the case proceeds toward trial.

What’s Next

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office reaffirmed Tuesday that Mary Jane Stephens’ cause of death was multiple stab wounds, officially labeling the case a homicide.
Officials said they hope the findings bring “clarity and justice” in what they describe as a tragic and allegedly preventable loss.

The trial for Ronald Stephens is set to begin in November 2025, where prosecutors are expected to present forensic and witness testimony.
