Taylor Sheridan, the prolific creator behind Yellowstone and multiple Paramount+ series, is adding “author” to his résumé. Simon & Schuster announced that Sheridan’s debut book, How to Not Die in Prison, will be released this summer.
The book is described as a “no bulls–t, darkly funny survival guide to life in a maximum-security prison.” Sheridan co-wrote it with Tom Nelson, a former inmate who brings firsthand experience to the project. According to the publisher, the guide covers everything from surviving riots, lockdowns, stabbings, and solitary confinement to lighter topics like making prison ramen, giving tattoos, and allegedly crafting a shiv.
In the book’s introduction, Sheridan admits he has never been to prison. “You might wonder what in the world gives me the knowledge or wisdom to write a survival guide to prison. Well, I’ll tell you — absolutely nothing. I’ve never been to prison. But, like every man, I’ve certainly wondered how I would survive if circumstances ever put me there.”
Sheridan explained that his research for Mayor of Kingstown sparked his curiosity about prison life. He noted that the project reinforced one lesson: it’s far better to avoid prison altogether than to figure out how to survive inside.
Co-author Tom Nelson provides the lived experience Sheridan lacks. Nelson writes candidly about his time in prison, saying he wished such a book had existed when he entered the system. His insights give the guide authenticity and depth, balancing Sheridan’s outsider perspective with real-world survival strategies.
Sheridan’s career has already spanned film and television, with credits including Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Mayor of Kingstown. He also has upcoming projects like The Madison and Marshals. Now, with How to Not Die in Prison, he ventures into publishing, further expanding his creative footprint.
Simon & Schuster acquired North American, first serial, and audiobook rights. Stuart Roberts, vice president and executive editor for special projects, oversaw the acquisition. The book is expected to appeal to fans of Sheridan’s gritty storytelling style, blending humor with hard truths about survival.
