Taylor Swift has done it again. Her single “Opalite” from The Life of a Showgirl has climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, marking her 14th career No. 1 hit. But the question remains: is this chart triumph the result of savvy marketing or true fan-driven success?
Unlike many of Swift’s past No. 1s, which surged to the top during their debut week, “Opalite” built momentum gradually. For nearly five months, the track hovered near the top of streaming and radio charts. Fans streamed it consistently, and radio stations kept it in heavy rotation, proving it was more than just a hype-driven release.
Swift gave “Opalite” a push with a star-studded music video inspired by her appearance on The Graham Norton Show. Featuring Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Cillian Murphy, and even Norton himself, the quirky 1990s-themed clip added buzz. But the video alone wasn’t enough to propel the song to No. 1.
What truly sealed the deal was a massive retail push. In one week, “Opalite” sold 168,000 copies—144,000 physical and 24,000 digital. In today’s streaming-dominated market, those numbers are extraordinary. Combined with strong radio airplay, the sales spike lifted the song from No. 8 to No. 1.
Swift now ties Rihanna with 14 career Hot 100 chart-toppers, trailing only Mariah Carey (19), Elvis Presley (17), and The Beatles (20). Importantly, The Life of a Showgirl becomes her first album since 1989 to generate multiple No. 1 singles, proving it deserves more respect than some critics initially gave.
While Swift’s strategic release tactics played a role, “Opalite” had already established itself as a fan favorite long before the retail blitz. Much like “Cruel Summer,” it grew organically before exploding into a mainstream smash. In today’s fragmented digital landscape, that kind of sustained popularity is rare—and a sign that “Opalite” is more than just a manufactured hit.
