‘Tell Me Lies’ Star Says Lucy and Stephen’s Relationship Goes ‘Beyond’ Toxic in Season 3

Hulu’s Tell Me Lies is back, and Season 3 wastes no time throwing viewers into emotional chaos. After Season 2 ended with a cliffhanger, the series returns with what the cast calls an intense mix of consequences, heartbreak, and explosive drama. Jackson White, who plays Stephen, says this season forces characters to confront fallout from years of damage.

“People are dealing with consequences,” White told USA TODAY, adding that the pressure is “all coming to a head,” and the result will be “explosive.”

Lucy and Stephen Restart Their Spiral — Again

At the center of the drama remains Lucy and Stephen, played by Grace Van Patten and White, whose relationship continues to be the show’s most addictive and disturbing storyline. Van Patten teased that Season 3 pushes their dynamic to a new extreme.

She said their relationship goes “beyond what I even thought toxic was,” describing the situations as so intense she could barely imagine them before filming. Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer also acknowledged the challenge of surprising viewers who expect mess.

“It’s hard to shock this audience,” she said, “but we try.”

Season 3 Picks Up on Bree’s Wedding Day

Season 3 opens right where the Season 2 finale ended — Bree’s wedding day. In Episode 1, Bree listens to a voicemail from Stephen while Lucy and Pippa stand nearby. The moment quickly turns tense as Bree spirals emotionally, running away and blurting out guilt-filled lines that raise immediate questions. Meanwhile, Pippa delivers a chilling reminder to Lucy about Stephen’s past behavior, hinting at deeper trauma still waiting to surface later in the season.

Flashbacks Reveal the 2009 Timeline Breakdown

The season also jumps back to 2009, showing Bree dealing with the end of her affair with Oliver and her breakup with Evan. Lucy and Bree spend Christmas break together before returning to school, where Lucy and Stephen once again decide to give their volatile connection another chance. But the “fresh start” doesn’t last long. Episode 2 shows Stephen confronting Lucy over her betrayal involving Evan. The tension grows fast, and Stephen’s manipulative instincts return in full force.

Stephen Pushes Lucy Into a Corner

As the season continues, Stephen becomes increasingly resentful and cruel. He humiliates Lucy, pressures her, and tries to force her into confessing the truth to Bree, claiming it’s the only way their relationship can survive.

Lucy refuses — but she doesn’t escape the fallout either. Van Patten described the dynamic as disturbing because both characters harm each other while also self-destructing at the same time.

Bree and Wrigley Share a Rare “Pure” Moment

Amid the chaos, Season 3 offers an unexpected emotional highlight: Bree and Wrigley. In Episode 1, they share an intimate late-night moment at a bus stop while high on MDMA. Their conversation touches on grief, identity, and loneliness — and it stands out as one of the season’s softest scenes so far. Oppenheimer said the pairing made sense because they have never intentionally harmed anyone else in the group, calling their moment a “pure connection.”

New Character Alex Enters the Picture

Season 3 also introduces Alex, played by Costa D’Angelo, a drug dealer and college student with ties to Bree’s past in foster care. Bree invites him into their circle, and Lucy soon gets pulled into his orbit. By Episode 3, Lucy sleeps with Alex, signaling the start of another potentially messy chapter.

A Shocking Twist: Stephen Blackmails Lucy

One of the biggest early twists comes when Stephen blackmails Lucy into recording a confession video. He forces her to admit she lied about being sexually assaulted by Lydia’s younger brother, Chris — a lie Lucy originally told while trying to protect Pippa.

Will There Be a Season 4?

Hulu has not renewed Tell Me Lies for Season 4 yet. Oppenheimer called the future “anyone’s guess,” though she promised the Season 3 finale brings satisfying closure while still leaving room for more.
