Royal Dresser Turned Killer: The Scandal Behind The Lady That Shook the Palace

ITVX’s new limited series The Lady has captivated audiences with its dramatization of Jane Andrews, the former dresser to Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. The four-part series, which premiered on BritBox on March 18, stars Mia McKenna-Bruce as Andrews and Natalie Dormer as Ferguson. Produced by the team behind The Crown, the show explores Andrews’ rise within royal circles and her eventual downfall.

From Palace Life to Personal Struggles

Andrews served as Ferguson’s personal dresser from 1988 to 1997. Originally from Lincolnshire, she grew up in a financially strained household and battled mental health challenges. At just 21, she secured the royal role after responding to an ad in The Lady magazine. Her career flourished, but her marriage to IBM executive Christopher Dunn-Butler collapsed in 1995. By 1997, Andrews was dismissed from Ferguson’s staff, a blow that left her deeply depressed.

The Murder of Thomas Cressman

After losing her royal position, Andrews began a relationship with businessman Thomas Cressman. Their romance quickly soured, marked by alleged abuse and volatile arguments. On September 17, 2000, following a heated dispute, Andrews attacked Cressman with a cricket bat and knife, killing him in his sleep. She fled the scene but was arrested days later after an overdose attempt.

Trial, Conviction, and Escape

In 2001, Andrews was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors argued she was enraged by Cressman’s refusal to marry her, while Andrews claimed she acted in self-defense against abuse. She served 18 years before her release in 2019, but not before briefly escaping custody in 2009, only to be recaptured days later.

Life After Prison and The Series

Since her release, Andrews has lived privately, avoiding public comment on The Lady. The series dramatizes her story but notes that certain details were altered for narrative purposes. ITV consulted Cressman’s family during production, offering them a private screening before release. The Lady sheds light on one of the most scandalous cases to touch the British royal family, blending fact and dramatization to explore how ambition, love, and tragedy collided in Andrews’ life.
