Why The Madison Premiere Was Dedicated to Robert Redford

The premiere of The Madison, Taylor Sheridan’s latest drama series, carried a heartfelt tribute to the late Robert Redford. At the end of the first episode, viewers saw a dedication card honoring the legendary actor and filmmaker, who passed away in September 2025.

Redford’s Influence on the Series

Director Christina Alexandra Voros explained why the team chose to honor Redford. “As a storyteller who has had such a profound influence on so many of us in a landscape that was made iconic by his work, it just made sense,” she said.

The Madison follows a grieving family relocating from New York City to rural Montana after a devastating loss. The show’s sweeping landscapes and themes of resilience echo Redford’s own work, particularly his environmental activism and his films set in the American West.

A River Runs Through It Connection

The series also directly references Redford’s 1992 film A River Runs Through It, which he directed. In one scene, Michelle Pfeiffer’s character Stacy and her family sit down to watch the movie, highlighting its significance to Kurt Russell’s character Preston. Both stories are set in Montana and feature fly fishing as a symbolic thread, underscoring the parallels between Redford’s film and Sheridan’s new series.

Redford’s Legacy with the Cast

The dedication also reflects Redford’s personal connection to The Madison star Michelle Pfeiffer. The two starred together in the 1996 romantic drama Up Close & Personal. Following Redford’s death, Pfeiffer shared a touching tribute on Instagram, posting a photo of them together with the caption: “Until we meet again, my friend.”

Sheridan’s Admiration

Taylor Sheridan has long admired Redford’s work. In fact, Redford was once considered for the role of John Dutton in Yellowstone. His influence on Sheridan’s storytelling style is evident in The Madison, which blends family drama with sweeping Western landscapes.

A Fitting Tribute

By dedicating The Madison to Redford, Sheridan and Voros acknowledged both his cinematic legacy and his impact on the themes of the series. The tribute serves as a reminder of Redford’s enduring influence on American film and television. Fans can continue to watch The Madison unfold, with the second half of season one streaming on Paramount+ beginning March 21.
