Hollywood’s Next Star Isn’t Human: Meet AI Actor Tilly Norwood

Tilly Norwood, the AI “actor” created by Eline Van der Velden, is moving into Hollywood projects after months of heated debate. Van der Velden confirmed that Norwood is collaborating with directors on multiple productions, though she did not specify whether they are films, shorts, or experimental projects. Audiences can expect to see Norwood “acting” in the coming months.

Music Video Marks Her Return

The announcement follows Norwood’s return to the public eye with a surreal music video. Using AI-generated vocals and motion-capture footage, the video addressed criticism head-on. In one verse, Norwood sings: “Behind the code, behind the light / I’m just a tool, but I’ve got life.”

Symbol of Hollywood’s AI Debate

Norwood has become a lightning rod for Hollywood’s unease with artificial intelligence. Talent agencies reacted strongly last year, with WME co-Chairman Richard Weitz stating, “We represent humans,” when asked about signing the AI performer.

Directors Experiment With AI

Despite resistance, several directors are embracing AI. Ben Affleck’s startup InterPositive was acquired by Netflix for $600 million. Doug Liman experimented with AI in his XR short Asteroids, while James Cameron joined the board of Stability AI in 2024.

Van der Velden’s Vision

Van der Velden insists that Norwood was designed to spark debate. “Tilly was created to make people sit up and take action,” she explained. “The creative community asked, ‘How do we future-proof ourselves?’ That was the aim of the game.”

Michelle Waldron, spokesperson for Van der Velden’s Particle6 production company, added that directors are using Norwood to test new storytelling methods. “It’s all part of the bigger experimentation,” she said. “You will see Tilly acting in the not too distant future.”

The Future of Synthetic Performers

For Van der Velden, Norwood represents a playground for creative exploration. “We’re just a big playground for people to come and play with AI,” she said. “And Tilly is one of those things you can play with.”

As Hollywood wrestles with the role of AI in entertainment, Norwood’s upcoming projects may serve as a litmus test for how audiences and industry professionals respond to synthetic performers. Whether embraced or resisted, Tilly Norwood is ensuring that the conversation around AI in film is impossible to ignore.
