Timothée Chalamet has shared a startling behind-the-scenes story from the set of Marty Supreme, the A24 drama that has earned him widespread acclaim. During a Q&A with Robert Downey Jr. at New York’s DGA Theater on January 14, the Golden Globe winner recalled a tense moment while filming the movie’s motel sequence.
Chalamet explained that director Josh Safdie often worked with non-actors to bring authenticity to the film. While performing a heated scene, Chalamet tried to provoke a background actor to deliver a stronger reaction. “I was saying to Josh, he’s not getting angry with me, he’s not getting angry with me,” Chalamet recalled. But the situation quickly escalated. “I did another take, and then the guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to f–k with me. You don’t want to see me angry,’” Chalamet revealed, adding with a nervous laugh, “I said to Josh, Holy shit, who do you have me opposite, man?”
The anecdote isn’t the only surprise surrounding Marty Supreme. Safdie recently revealed at London’s BFI Southbank that Robert Pattinson makes a secret, voice-only cameo in the film. Pattinson, who previously collaborated with Safdie on Good Time (2017), voices the commentator and umpire in the ping pong drama — a subtle Easter egg for fans.
Marty Supreme follows the rise of American table tennis star Marty Mauser, played by Chalamet, as he navigates the international circuit. The film also stars Odessa A’zion, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Fran Drescher. Chalamet’s performance has already earned him both a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award. A’zion has also been recognized, receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at The Actor Awards.
Chalamet’s awards season success has been accompanied by public support from his girlfriend of three years, Kylie Jenner. At the Golden Globes on January 12, Chalamet kissed Jenner before delivering a heartfelt acceptance speech. He thanked his parents, costars, and Jenner, saying, “My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up… It’s allowed me to leave this ceremony in the past empty-handed, my head held high, grateful just to be here.” He concluded with an emotional note: “For my parents, for my partner, I love you. Thank you so much.”
Between unexpected on-set encounters, hidden celebrity cameos, and awards season triumphs, Marty Supreme continues to generate buzz. Chalamet’s revelation adds another layer of intrigue to the film, which blends Safdie’s gritty realism with a compelling sports drama narrative.
