Actor and director Timothy Busfield, known for roles in Field of Dreams and Revenge of the Nerds, has been formally charged in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Court documents confirm Busfield faces two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and child abuse, linked to alleged misconduct involving child actors on the set of Fox’s The Cleaning Lady.
The investigation began in November 2024, when staff at the University of New Mexico Hospital alerted authorities after suspecting grooming behavior. According to affidavits, two children initially described Busfield—whom they referred to as “Uncle Tim”—tickling them in ways they did not welcome.
Later interviews revealed more serious claims, with the children alleging Busfield touched them inappropriately over their clothing while on set.
Busfield reportedly told investigators, “I don’t remember it… If it happened, I don’t remember… But it wouldn’t be uncommon for me.” He also claimed his family had bought the children Christmas gifts and attended social gatherings with them, suggesting the accusations were motivated by revenge after the children were not invited back for a new season of the show.
Witnesses told police that the on-set special teacher responsible for supervising the children occasionally “lost sight” of them. Warner Bros. conducted its own internal investigation but stated the allegations could not be substantiated.
Court documents note Busfield has faced sexual assault allegations before—in 1994 and 2012—though neither case resulted in charges.
As of Friday evening, records show Busfield has not been arrested. He maintains a residence in Albuquerque, though it is unclear if he lives there full-time.
Busfield is an Emmy-winning actor and director with credits spanning film and television. His notable works include Field of Dreams, Little Big League, Revenge of the Nerds, Stripes, Striking Distance, and Sneakers.
The charges against Busfield highlight ongoing concerns about child safety in the entertainment industry. Allegations of misconduct on sets have prompted studios to strengthen oversight, but this case underscores the challenges of protecting young performers.
Busfield’s case will proceed through the New Mexico courts. It remains unclear whether he will be taken into custody. The outcome could have significant implications for both his career and broader industry practices regarding child actors.
