Val Chmerkovskiy, one of Dancing With the Stars’ most beloved pros, was hospitalized over the weekend after experiencing severe vertigo. The 39-year-old dancer revealed on Instagram that he was unable to perform during the tour stop in Peoria, Illinois, on Sunday, March 1.
Posting a selfie from the hospital, Chmerkovskiy apologized to fans who attended the show. “It takes quite literally me not being able to stand on my feet to keep me off that stage. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t make it tonight,” he wrote.
He later shared a video explaining his condition. “I’ve just been having vertigo for the past couple of days… once that little crystal in your equilibrium goes out, it’s really hard to get it back in. I’m just spinning everywhere,” he said. Chmerkovskiy added that he hoped to recover quickly, noting that the tour had a scheduled day off before resuming in Milwaukee on March 3.
Messages of encouragement poured in from fellow dancers and fans. His wife, Jenna Johnson, commented with a heart emoji, while former pro Sharna Burgess wrote, “Vertigo is awful. I’m so sorry babe. Feel better soon xx.” Season 34 competitor Dylan Efron also shared his own experience, saying, “Vertigo is awful. Happened to me right before DWTS but it healed quickly. Rest up and get those crystals aligned.”
Despite Chmerkovskiy’s absence, his castmates rallied to perform in Peoria. The DWTS tour, which runs through May, features several fan-favorite pros and celebrities from recent seasons. The next stop is Milwaukee’s Miller High Life Theatre, where Chmerkovskiy hopes to rejoin the cast.
Known for his passion and dedication, Chmerkovskiy emphasized that it takes a serious setback to keep him off the stage. His determination and the support of his colleagues highlight the close-knit nature of the DWTS family. Fans are hopeful he will return soon and continue dazzling audiences across the country.
