The Westminster Dog Show honored the late Catherine O’Hara with a heartfelt tribute at Madison Square Garden, celebrating her comedic brilliance and lasting impact on film and television. O’Hara, who passed away on January 30 at the age of 71, was remembered with a video montage featuring her iconic role as Cookie Fleck in Christopher Guest’s 2000 mockumentary Best in Show.
The tribute played on the jumbotron ahead of the terrier group judging, a nod to O’Hara’s character in Best in Show, who owned a Norwich terrier named Winky. The screen displayed the words: “A true legend, timeless talent and icon,” alongside her name and life dates. The moment connected the real-life dog show with O’Hara’s beloved performance, reminding audiences of her ability to blend humor with heart in a way that resonated across generations.
Best in Show was one of several collaborations between O’Hara, Eugene Levy, and Christopher Guest. The trio also worked together on Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration. O’Hara and Levy later reunited on the Emmy-winning sitcom Schitt’s Creek, portraying Johnny and Moira Rose for six seasons.
Levy reflected on their decades-long partnership in a tribute, writing: “I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years… I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. And I will miss her.”
Guest added: “We have lost one of the comic giants of our age. I send my love to her family.”
O’Hara’s career spanned film, television, and stage, with standout roles in Home Alone, Schitt’s Creek, and numerous Christopher Guest films. Her ability to embody eccentric yet relatable characters made her one of the most respected comedic talents of her generation. The Westminster tribute underscored how her work in Best in Show transcended cinema, becoming part of the cultural fabric of dog shows and comedy alike.
