Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good, directed by Jon M. Chu, is tracking to become one of the biggest box office hits of 2025. The musical sequel, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, is projected to open between $160–$190 million domestically, well above initial expectations. Following the recent success of Predator: Badlands, industry forecasts suggest Wicked: For Good could surpass top 2025 releases like Minecraft and Lilo & Stitch. The film releases worldwide on November 21, 2025, signaling a major rebound for theaters after a difficult October.
According to Box Office Theory and The Hollywood Reporter, Wicked: For Good’s latest estimates far exceed the $112.5 million debut of 2024’s Wicked. The first installment grossed $756.4 million globally, and current projections hint the sequel could reach or exceed the $1 billion mark.
The film revisits the world of Oz, focusing on the fractured friendship between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). As Elphaba continues her fight for Oz’s silenced Animals and Glinda balances public image with private guilt, the emotional sequel deepens the narrative established in the original.
Universal’s decision to split the story into two films appears to be paying off, with audiences responding strongly to the expanded world-building and musical storytelling.
Box office analysts are confident that Wicked: For Good could challenge the year’s top-performing titles.
“Wicked: For Good has all the ingredients of a holiday box office powerhouse — star power, nostalgia, and a proven brand,” said film analyst Ryan Scott. “The momentum from the first film, combined with streaming accessibility, has only expanded its fan base.”
The film also benefits from its strategic Thanksgiving release window, mirroring the strong second-weekend hold seen by the 2024 film, which dropped just 28% due to holiday attendance.
The arrival of Wicked: For Good marks a turning point for the post-summer 2025 box office slump. October’s disappointing numbers, the worst since 1997, left exhibitors in need of a major event film. With Predator: Badlands already performing above expectations, the upcoming release of Wicked could stabilize the market and attract family audiences back to theaters.
The potential of surpassing Minecraft’s $162.7 million domestic debut could also position Wicked as the highest-grossing musical film of all time, further strengthening Universal’s foothold in the genre.
Following Wicked: For Good, studios are preparing for a strong close to the year with high-profile titles such as Disney’s Zootopia 2 and Paramount’s The Running Man. Universal is expected to announce Wicked Part III or spin-offs based on side characters, depending on box office performance.
