Zach Galifianakis is trading punchlines for plants in his new Netflix series This is a Gardening Show. Known for his offbeat humor in The Hangover and Between Two Ferns, Galifianakis now turns his curiosity toward the garden, blending comedy with education in a six-episode series set to premiere on Earth Day, April 22.
In the teaser, Galifianakis quips, “If I were to offer a remedy to the human condition, it would be gardening. And acid.” While the joke sets the tone, the actor makes clear that the series will explore serious questions about food and sustainability. “The way we get food is so perverse right now, I think it’s worth talking about it,” he says.
Rather than positioning himself as an expert, Galifianakis approaches gardening with curiosity and self-effacing humor. Netflix describes the show as a “refreshing and whimsical take” that aims to give audiences accessible tools for their own gardens. Expect plenty of digging, harvesting, and quirky questions — including Galifianakis asking, “What is a tomato?”
The series is directed by Brook Linder and produced by Chris Kim, with RadicalMedia and Galifianakis’ Billios Productions behind the project. Executive producers include Galifianakis, Frank Scherma, and Jon Kamen.
While fans know him best for his comedic interviews with A-listers on Between Two Ferns, Galifianakis has built a diverse career. His recent credits include Bob’s Burgers, Only Murders in the Building, Ron’s Gone Wrong, and Baskets. He will also star in AMC’s upcoming series The Audacity.
Dropping on April 22, This is a Gardening Show aligns with Earth Day, making its themes of sustainability and food production especially timely. With Galifianakis’ trademark humor and curiosity, the series promises to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
