Calgary Flames rookie defenseman Zayne Parekh exited Friday night’s matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks with an upper-body injury, following a heavy hit from Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno in the second period. The incident occurred during a highly physical contest at the Scotiabank Saddledome, which saw three fights and multiple injury stoppages before the third period. Parekh, 19, was ruled out for the remainder of the game, raising concerns about his short-term availability and long-term development.
The injury took place midway through the second period when Foligno delivered a clean but forceful check along the boards. Parekh, who had logged 6:25 of ice time across seven shifts, appeared shaken and was escorted off the ice by team medical staff. The Flames quickly confirmed he would not return, citing an upper-body injury.
At the time of Parekh’s exit, the Blackhawks led 1–0, courtesy of a power-play goal from Tyler Bertuzzi. The game’s physical tone was set early, with multiple altercations and aggressive forechecking from both sides. Chicago’s Frank Nazar also left the game after a collision with Joel Farabee, adding to the night’s injury toll.
Parekh was selected 9th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft and entered the league as one of the most promising young defensemen. Standing at 6’0”, the Markham, Ontario native had a breakout season with the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL, scoring 33 goals and 107 points in 61 games — a rare feat for a defenseman.
He made his NHL debut in the 2024–25 season finale against the Los Angeles Kings, scoring his first goal in that game. This season, Parekh has played 11 games, recording one assist while primarily occupying bottom-pairing minutes. His skating ability, offensive instincts, and poise under pressure have earned praise from coaches and analysts alike.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska addressed the injury postgame: “Zayne’s been progressing well. We’ll evaluate him further tomorrow, but we’re hopeful it’s nothing long-term. He’s a key part of our future.”
TSN analyst Craig Button commented, “Parekh’s development curve has been steep. Any setback now could impact his availability for Team Canada at the World Juniors, which would be unfortunate.”
Parekh’s injury comes at a time when Calgary is managing a young defensive core amid a rebuilding phase. His absence could disrupt defensive pairings and special teams rotations, especially with veteran depth limited.
Internationally, Parekh remains eligible for Team Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship. His participation will depend on recovery timelines and clearance from Hockey Canada. Given his age and skill set, he was expected to be a top-pairing candidate for the national squad.
The Flames will monitor Parekh’s condition over the weekend, with further medical evaluations scheduled. Calgary’s next game is against the Minnesota Wild on Monday, and his status remains day-to-day.
If sidelined, the Flames may recall a defenseman from their AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, to fill the roster gap. Fans and scouts alike will be watching closely, as Parekh’s development is considered central to Calgary’s long-term plans.
