Country music fans have long speculated about the relationship between Megan Moroney and Morgan Wallen, especially after the release of Moroney’s breakout hit “Tennessee Orange” in 2022. Now, the singer is offering rare clarity about their current status. In an exclusive interview for PEOPLE StyleWatch’s holiday cover, Moroney opened up about her connection with Wallen following their split — and how their history continues to influence her music.
Speaking candidly, the 28-year-old star praised Wallen both personally and professionally.
“I think Morgan is great and his new album I’m the Problem is great. Him and I are still friends,” Moroney shared.
The pair first drew public attention when fans noticed social media interaction between them in late 2022. Around the same time, Moroney released “Tennessee Orange” — which quickly sparked rumors that the romantic ballad was inspired by Wallen. The following year, Wallen released “Tennessee Fan”, adding fuel to the speculation.
Moroney later acknowledged that the University of Tennessee shirt she wore on the single’s artwork belonged to Wallen, a revelation she said caused her anxiety in real time.
Moroney explained that being open in her songwriting has always been essential to her creative process — even when it leads to heightened scrutiny.
“I never let the possibility that people might speculate who a song is about stop me from writing about how the situation made me feel,” she said.
The singer admitted that the rumor mill originally made her “really uncomfortable”, but she also understands why people connected emotionally to the song.
During a July 2024 appearance on Call Her Daddy, Moroney confirmed that something romantic did occur between her and Wallen, but emphasized that they never dated exclusively and are no longer involved.
When asked directly whether “Tennessee Orange” was about Wallen, Moroney maintained a firm boundary.
“I will not say who I sing my songs about ever,” she said.
Moroney is currently celebrating her continued success with music, including her recent single “Beautiful Things,” and says she feels confident and creative as she moves forward.
While she has no plans to further discuss past relationships publicly, she continues to embrace authenticity in her lyrics — even when the stories behind them remain a mystery.
