Simon Cowell Responds to Blame Over Liam Payne’s Death and Reveals Final Moments

Music mogul Simon Cowell is speaking publicly about his last conversation with Liam Payne, sharing emotional details about their final interaction one year before the former One Direction star’s tragic death. During the Nov. 24 episode of the “Rolling Stone Music Now” podcast, Cowell reflected on their private meeting and addressed public speculation about his responsibility in Payne’s struggles.

Payne died at age 31 on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Officials later confirmed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.27%, significantly above the legal limit. Payne’s passing shocked fans worldwide, sparking conversations about mental health, fame, and the pressures of the entertainment industry.

Cowell Says Their Final Visit Felt Positive

Cowell revealed that Payne visited his home about a year before his death. He remembered the singer appearing healthy and optimistic.

“He looked amazing, by the way. This is the best I’ve ever seen him,” Cowell said. “We talked about his son, being a dad, and what that means.”

Cowell advised Payne not to let music dictate his life, encouraging him to explore happiness outside the industry. Payne, who shares a child with partner Cheryl, had recently been working on the upcoming Netflix music-competition series “Building the Band” alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland.

A Loss That Deeply Impacted Cowell

Cowell said Payne’s passing affected him more than any loss outside his family. He admitted that he has questioned whether he could have done more.

“I wish I could turn back the clock,” Cowell said. “I felt really good about him that day… I didn’t feel worried about him after he left.”

He added that Payne’s parents told him their son was “proud of what he achieved” despite public speculation about his struggles.

Addressing Blame and Online Criticism

Following Payne’s death, some online comments blamed Cowell and the music industry for contributing to the pressures Payne faced. Cowell said he avoids social media negativity.

“If I read any of this stuff, you would just torture yourself,” he said. “The idea that you are essentially responsible for somebody’s life … you can’t live with them.”

Cowell emphasized that Payne reached out not for help, but simply to reconnect.

“He said, ‘I just want to see you, because I miss you,’ and I said, ‘Great. I miss you too.’”

How Cowell and Payne First Met

Payne first auditioned for “The X Factor UK” in 2008 and again in 2010. During the 2010 season, Cowell and fellow judges grouped Payne with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, creating what would become One Direction, one of the most successful boy bands in music history. The group sold more than 70 million records before going on hiatus in 2016.

Cowell shared that he admired Payne’s persistence and talent from a young age.

“A lot of people would have given up. You didn’t.”

Payne openly discussed his struggle with alcohol in past interviews, telling USA TODAY in 2019 that sobriety was part of his journey toward maturity and stability.

Today, Cowell hopes Payne will be remembered not for tragedy but for resilience and achievement.
