Avalon’s Shocking Deal: ‘Pride’ & ‘Last Christmas’ Producer Calamity Films Sells Stake in Major Industry Shake-Up

Updated :  Thursday, December 4, 2025 9:15 AM
Avalon acquires stake in Calamity Films, producer of Pride, Last Christmas and Brassic.

Avalon, the global talent management and production powerhouse, has acquired a stake in British independent studio Calamity Films, the company behind hit titles including Pride, Last Christmas, Judy and Sky’s long-running comedy series Brassic. The investment marks a strategic partnership aimed at expanding Calamity’s slate of film and television projects in the U.K. and international markets.

While financial details and the size of the stake were not disclosed, the companies confirmed that the collaboration will align Calamity Films with the U.K.’s largest independent production company, strengthening development, distribution and talent resources across both organizations.

Founded in 2013 by David Livingstone, Calamity Films has earned significant acclaim and commercial success. Pride won the Queer Palm at Cannes, Judy secured Renée Zellweger a sweep of major awards including the Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe, and Last Christmas became a global box-office success, grossing more than $120 million worldwide. Meanwhile, Brassic remains Sky’s most successful comedy series, now spanning seven seasons and 50 episodes.

Expanding Creative Ambition With a New Strategic Partner

The partnership arrives at a pivotal moment for Calamity Films as it develops Pride the Musical, reuniting director Matthew Warchus and writer Stephen Beresford, which is scheduled to open at the National Theatre in 2026. Calamity is also preparing a diverse slate of new film and TV projects now backed by expanded resources.

Livingstone expressed enthusiasm about the new chapter:

“We are incredibly pleased to be announcing our partnership with Avalon. We’ve known and admired the Avalon team for many years, and I’m delighted we can further develop our relationship as Calamity looks ahead to its next chapter.”

Avalon CEO Laura Kennedy highlighted the shared creative vision:

“We love to partner with distinctive producers like David and share his commitment to talent-led, creative excellence. We are thrilled to be in business together moving forward.”

As part of the agreement, Calamity will retain its London offices, continuing operations independently while integrating development and production capability with Avalon’s global infrastructure.

A Deal Reflecting Strong Momentum Across the Industry

The acquisition supports Avalon’s broader strategy to scale scripted content and expand international production in an evolving media landscape. The move follows increased investor interest in independent studios with proven IP and award-winning credibility.

For Calamity Films, the partnership positions the company to push forward ambitious projects with international reach — including returning franchises and prestige film releases.

With demand for premium scripted content rising across streaming and theatrical markets, industry watchers expect more strategic alliances of this scale in the year ahead.
