The BBC Entertainment Commissioning division has officially announced a search for a brand-new innovative comedy entertainment format scheduled to debut in 2026. The broadcaster is calling for dynamic and creative proposals that challenge conventional approaches, aiming to develop a 10-episode comedy series, with each episode lasting 30 minutes.

The show will premiere across BBC Two and BBC iPlayer, with a unique two-week broadcast window designed to encourage binge-watching and flexible viewing. The project reflects the BBC’s desire to bring fresh, engaging, and highly shareable comedic content to audiences in the UK and internationally.

BBC Calls for Format-First, Fun-Centered Proposals

Unlike traditional scripted sitcoms or topical panel shows, the BBC is specifically requesting format-first ideas driven by spontaneity, humor, and originality. The commissioning team hopes to develop a program that can stand out within an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape.

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment Commissioning, emphasized the goal of capturing energy and authentic personality rather than relying on scripts or predictable formats.

“We’re looking for something fresh, fun, and rooted in universal themes. We want a series that audiences can’t resist, whether they watch every episode in one sitting or dip in and out.”

The BBC is seeking concepts that encourage chemistry among performers, ideally blending established comedic talent with rising voices, offering a natural and unscripted feel.

Eligibility & Production Requirements

To be considered, proposals must be submitted by UK-based production companies with a proven track record in high-volume, fast-turnaround entertainment programming. However, companies outside this scope may collaborate with qualified partners to apply.

Selected pitches will move into a paid development phase, after which one stand-out format will be commissioned to move into production. The collaboration will include budgeting, timeline planning, and creative refinement with BBC executives.

The full brief — including details on submission structure, financial requirements, and editorial expectations — is available on the BBC Commissioning website.
