The BBC’s hit adventure series Race Across the World is back, and producers are searching for new contestants willing to take on one of television’s most demanding challenges.
A Journey Without Phones or Flights
First launched in 2019, the show tasks five duos with racing thousands of miles across continents. Contestants must reach the final checkpoint first to win a £20,000 cash prize. The twist? No phones, no internet, no flights, and only limited funds.
The format forces participants to rely on local transport, resourcefulness, and teamwork. Past contestants describe the experience as “life-changing” and “surreal.”
Inspiring Past Winners
Cathie Rowe and Tricia Sail, best friends from Aberystwyth, won series three after racing from Vancouver to Newfoundland. Tricia, who has a degenerative eye condition, said she joined to prove what people with disabilities can achieve.
“Before the race I was struggling with my mental health, I had no self-belief at all,” she explained. “Since going on the show I now give things a go.”
Cathie added that the “off the grid” journey boosted her confidence in traveling beyond tourist destinations. Together, they have continued exploring the world, including treks across the Great Wall of China and visits to Machu Picchu.
Young Adventurers Take the Leap
Series five featured childhood sweethearts Fin Gough and Sioned Cray from Carmarthenshire. At just 19 and 21, they raced across China, Nepal, and India, finishing third.
“It was very daunting having our phones taken off us,” said Fin. “We had gone on family holidays before, but never backpack-style traveling.”
Sioned described the race as “diving into the deep end,” admitting she struggled at times but now finds travel “easier and more enjoyable.” Since the show, the couple has visited 16 countries, including Bolivia, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.
What’s Next
A trailer for series six teases a new epic journey from Europe to the “uncharted edges” of Mongolia. The BBC’s casting call emphasizes inclusivity: “This experience is open to all, whether you’re a seasoned traveller or total novice.” Applications close on 29 March 2026, giving hopeful adventurers just weeks to apply for a chance at the £20,000 prize and a once-in-a-lifetime journey.
