Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton’s fifth season will feature its first sapphic love story. The new season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd), who, after losing her husband, finds herself drawn to Michaela (Masali Baduza), her late husband’s cousin.
A Bold New Direction
The press release describes Francesca as “reserved and contained” and long feeling out of place in society. Michaela, meanwhile, is portrayed as “vulnerable” and quick to run from discomfort. Their relationship will challenge both women to confront their emotions and identities, setting the stage for one of the show’s most groundbreaking romances yet.
Representation in Bridgerton
This marks a significant step for the series, which has previously hinted at queer storylines. Francesca’s bisexuality was teased earlier, while Benedict Bridgerton’s bisexuality has been explored across multiple seasons. Showrunner Jess Bronwell emphasized the importance of authentic representation, noting that bisexual men and women often face harmful stereotypes in media.
Fan Excitement Builds
An announcement video released by Netflix shows Francesca and Michaela sharing a tender moment, sparking excitement among fans. The romance, nicknamed “Franchaela” by viewers, was teased in Season 4 and will now take center stage in Season 5.
Production Status
Season 5 has officially entered production, though Netflix has not yet announced a release date. The upcoming eight-episode season continues the tradition of adapting each Bridgerton sibling’s love story, with Francesca now stepping into the spotlight.
