Daniel Radcliffe has revealed his intention to become a U.S. citizen, marking a new chapter in the actor’s life. Speaking on Bustle’s One Nightstand series, the Harry Potter star explained that he has lived in America full-time since 2020, after years of moving back and forth between the U.K. and the U.S. since 2012.
Family Ties
Radcliffe currently holds a Green Card, which allows him to live and work permanently in the United States. He noted that he must wait at least four years before applying for citizenship. His decision is closely tied to family: Radcliffe and his partner, American actress Erin Darke, welcomed their son in April 2023.
“Well, I wanted to get a Green Card because my son is American and I’m going to need to be able to be here whenever I need to be here,” he said. He admitted it feels “weirdly impotent” not being able to participate in U.S. politics.
On Parenthood and Acting
Radcliffe also shared his hopes that his son avoids following him into acting. “I would love my child not to be what I do for many reasons,” he explained, citing the challenges of being labeled a “nepo baby.” He joked that if his son became a tree surgeon, “nobody’s going to be comparing us.”
Still, Radcliffe acknowledged that some celebrity children have successfully navigated the industry. He praised actress Allison Williams for openly embracing the “nepo baby” label, saying she handled the conversation “right.”
