After nearly two decades away, Gnarls Barkley — the duo of producer Danger Mouse and singer-rapper Cee-Lo Green — is back. The group has announced their third and final album, Atlanta, set for release on March 6 via 10k Projects/Atlantic.
New Single “Pictures”
The comeback is led by the single “Pictures,” which reflects on Atlanta’s MARTA public transit line. Green described the track as a “full circle moment,” rooted in childhood experiences and self-discovery. “The spirit of Gnarls Barkley is always self-discovery. The sweet, the sad, and the strange,” he explained.
The song’s hook was inspired by Green’s middle school years, when he would ride the train alone for hours. “When you are in transit it’s like a motion picture passing you by,” he said.
A Historic Legacy
Gnarls Barkley first burst onto the scene in 2006 with St. Elsewhere and its global hit “Crazy,” which topped charts worldwide and has been streamed more than 1.4 billion times on Spotify. Their follow-up, The Odd Couple (2008), cemented their reputation as innovators, with the duo performing more than 100 shows in costume before stepping away from the spotlight.
Life After Gnarls Barkley
During the hiatus, both artists pursued individual projects. Green released solo albums, reunited with Goodie Mob, coached on The Voice, and published a memoir. Danger Mouse formed Broken Bells with James Mercer of The Shins and produced for major artists including Adele, U2, Frank Ocean, Gorillaz, and A$AP Rocky.
