Actress Greer Grammer has spoken candidly about her relationship with her father, Emmy-winning actor Kelsey Grammer, during a recent appearance on the Pretty Basic Podcast.
Greer recalled their reconnection as teenagers after years of estrangement, sharing both the challenges and eventual healing in their relationship.
Estrangement and Reconnection
Kelsey Grammer split from Greer’s mother when she was just four years old. The two reconnected years later when Kelsey approached her during a community service event.
“He came up to me and said, ‘Are you Greer?’ And I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ Then he went, ‘I’m…’ And I was like, ‘I know who you are. Duh,’” Greer recalled. Their first lunch together marked the beginning of rebuilding their bond.
The ‘Meanest Thing’ He Said
Greer revealed that one of the most painful moments came when her father admitted he had once suggested she might be better off without his last name.
“I think I was like 19 when he told me that and I started sobbing,” she said. “To me that was the meanest thing you could ever say to somebody.”
Despite the hurt, Greer acknowledged that her father’s reasoning was “fair,” as he believed it might have made her childhood easier given his absence.
Kelsey Grammer’s Family Life
In October 2025, Kelsey welcomed his eighth child with wife Kayte Walsh, with whom he has been married for 14 years. The couple already share three children: Faith, 12, Gabriel, 10, and James, 8.
