Halle Berry is opening up about her engagement to musician Van Hunt, sharing how she knew he was the right partner for her. The Oscar-winning actress spoke exclusively to PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Crime 101 on February 10, just days after confirming her engagement. Berry, 59, said her life experience helped her recognize true love.
“You know, you get to be 54, you just kind of done it a few times, three, to be exact,” Berry explained. “You just kind of know when it’s right, ’cause you know when it’s wrong.”
A Sparkling Symbol of Love
Berry’s dazzling engagement ring stole the spotlight on the red carpet. Jewelry experts estimate the ring could be worth over $200,000. The centerpiece is a bezel-cut diamond weighing around 2 carats, surrounded by more than 20 colored diamonds and gemstones set in yellow gold.
Chau Lui, co-founder of CELI, described the design as “deeply personal,” noting that unique multi-stone settings are becoming increasingly popular. Berry paired the ring with a gold choker necklace and a chic black suit, complete with a silk blouse featuring a ruffled collar and plunging neckline.
Confirming the Engagement
Berry first revealed her engagement during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 5. She clarified rumors about her relationship status, telling Fallon, “Of course, I said ‘yes, I would marry him.’”
Fallon congratulated the couple, joking about the size of Berry’s ring. Berry responded warmly, saying, “He did put a little ring on it.”
A Love Story Years in the Making
Berry and Hunt, 54, made their relationship Instagram official in September 2020 after months of speculation. The couple has been together for nearly six years. Berry was previously married to David Justice, Eric Benét, and Olivier Martinez. With Hunt, she says she feels a certainty that comes only with experience.
The premiere of Crime 101 was a family affair, attended by Berry’s co-star Chris Hemsworth, his brother Liam, and their parents. But it was Berry’s sparkling ring and heartfelt words about Hunt that captured the evening’s attention.
