Hilary Swank has issued an apology after a tense encounter at Los Angeles International Airport with a mother traveling to Disneyland with her two terminally ill sons.

The Airport Incident

The two-time Oscar winner reportedly snapped at Jada Bafus of Spokane, Washington, after mistakenly believing she was trying to take a photo of her. Bafus had pulled out her phone at baggage claim to call her husband when Swank hissed, “I hope you enjoy that picture.” Bafus, surprised to realize the woman confronting her was the Million Dollar Baby star, quickly clarified she was not taking a photo. Swank then stormed off, leaving the mother shaken at the start of her family’s Make-A-Wish trip.

A Painful Misunderstanding

Bafus explained that her sons, Mason, 7, and Jack, 4, both suffer from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a terminal illness that causes muscle weakness and shortens life expectancy. Mason’s wish trip to Disneyland had been arranged by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with Jack joining as well.

“It just hurt my feelings because I was starting my son’s Make-A-Wish trip,” Bafus said. “She wouldn’t have known, but it was one of those situations where it was my first encounter with a celebrity.”

Swank’s Apology

Swank later reached out to Bafus via Instagram to apologize. She explained that she was worried someone was trying to take photos of her twins, whom she has never shared publicly. Swank and her husband Philip Schneider welcomed son Ohm and daughter Aya in 2023. Bafus accepted the apology, noting that the incident did not spoil their trip. “She was having a bad day,” she said, adding that she remained a fan of Swank’s films.

Disneyland Magic

Despite the rocky start, the family’s visit to Disneyland was filled with joy. Bafus praised the Disney and Make-A-Wish staff for treating them like VIPs. “These cast members must be trained to find the Make-A-Wish kids because we were just walking around and they would come and get us on the ride,” she said. “It was pretty cool to see all the perks we received.”

A Reminder of Compassion

The incident highlights the challenges celebrities face in public while underscoring the importance of patience and compassion. For Bafus and her sons, the trip ultimately delivered the magic they had hoped for, despite the misunderstanding at the airport.
