Tessa Thompson & Jon Bernthal Preview the Emotional Pain of Netflix Thriller His & Hers

Netflix is leaning into psychological tension and emotional complexity with His & Hers, a new six-episode thriller adapted from Alice Feeney’s bestselling novel. Starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal, the series premieres globally on January 8, 2026, and promises a dark exploration of trust, memory, and unresolved pain.

A reunion shaped by suspicion and history

At the center of His & Hers are estranged spouses Anna Andrews and Jack Harper. Anna, played by Thompson, is a news anchor who returns to her hometown in Georgia chasing a potential career-defining story after years of living in emotional isolation. Jack, portrayed by Bernthal, is a local detective still rooted in the town—and in the life Anna left behind. Their reunion is triggered by a murder investigation that forces them back into each other’s orbit. As professional boundaries blur, personal history resurfaces, complicating both the case and their already fractured relationship. Jack finds himself questioning not only Anna’s motives, but also her possible involvement in the crime.

“There’s a lot of pain”

Bernthal describes the dynamic between the characters as intense and unavoidable. He says Jack and Anna are “chemically and undeniably drawn to each other,” but also deeply damaged by their shared past. “There’s no one who drives my character more crazy in all of the ways than Anna,” he explains, underscoring the emotional volatility that defines their interactions. That friction forms the emotional engine of the series. Rather than relying solely on plot twists, His & Hers leans heavily into the psychological cost of unresolved relationships, using the investigation as a pressure cooker for long-buried resentment and longing.

Journalism versus law enforcement

Thompson highlights the layered tension between the characters’ professional roles. As a journalist and a detective working the same crime scene, Anna and Jack approach truth from fundamentally different angles. “There’s this adversarial thing that gets played out,” she notes, pointing to the inherent conflict between law enforcement and the press. Yet Thompson argues that the deeper conflict is far more personal. The pain comes from what was never resolved during their marriage. “All the things that you didn’t figure out and you didn’t say—they come back immediately when you see the person again, like no time has passed,” she says. That emotional immediacy fuels much of the show’s intensity.

Two sides to every story

Netflix’s official description frames the series around a central idea: there are always two sides to every story—his and hers—which means someone is lying. The structure of the show reflects this theme, encouraging viewers to constantly reassess whose version of events can be trusted. As the investigation unfolds, perspective becomes a weapon. Memory, bias, and emotional wounds shape how each character interprets the truth, keeping the audience guessing until the very end.

A character-driven thriller

With Thompson also serving as an executive producer, His & Hers positions itself as a character-first thriller rather than a conventional whodunit. The murder mystery may drive the plot, but the heart of the series lies in the painful intimacy between two people who know each other too well—and not well enough.
