A fundraiser launched to support James Van Der Beek’s family has surpassed $1 million in donations less than 24 hours after the actor’s death was announced. On Wednesday, a spokesperson confirmed that the Dawson’s Creek star had died peacefully at the age of 48 following a two-and-a-half-year battle with colorectal cancer. The news prompted friends of the actor to set up a GoFundMe campaign to help his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children as they face significant financial strain.
By early Thursday, more than 19,200 donors had contributed to the fund, raising over $1 million of the $1.3 million goal. The funds will be used to cover living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education.
Kimberly Van Der Beek’s Statement
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Kimberly expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.
“My friends created this link to support me and our children during this time. With gratitude and a broken heart,” she wrote.
Organizers of the fundraiser explained that the costs of James’s medical care and his extended fight against cancer had left the family financially drained. They emphasized that the donations would help the family remain in their home and provide stability for the children during this difficult period.
Community Support
The campaign has drawn widespread attention, with fans and colleagues rallying to support the Van Der Beek family. The organizers noted that the generosity of friends, family, and the wider community will make a “world of difference” as Kimberly and her children navigate life after James’s passing.
