Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto is set to take on one of pop culture’s most iconic villains — Skeletor — in the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie. According to director Travis Knight, Leto approached the project with passion and a clear vision for how to embody He-Man’s nemesis.
Leto’s Vision for Skeletor
Knight revealed to Empire magazine that Leto was determined to deliver a bold interpretation of the skull-faced villain.
“Jared approached us, because he loves Skeletor and has his own history with the character. He wanted to swing for the fences,” Knight said.
The director added that Skeletor would be portrayed as “the embodiment of toxic masculinity,” while still retaining the humor, insecurity, and distinctive voice that made him memorable in the original cartoons.
Staying True to the Original Look
Knight emphasized that Leto’s Skeletor will remain faithful to the classic design, complete with a skull face, purple hood, and hollow eye sockets.
“Skeletor has a skull face. That’s just the way it is. It’s a living, talking, emoting skull, and that’s that,” Knight explained.
A Star-Studded Cast
The film features Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and Camila Mendes as Teela. Elba shared his excitement about joining the project, noting that the original toys and cartoons were a big part of his childhood.
“It was like being at a big amusement arcade with all these massive characters,” Elba said, joking that the role pushed him to hit the gym.
Honoring the Legacy
Knight, best known for directing Bumblebee, said his goal was to pay homage to the aesthetic of the original Masters of the Universe while crafting a fresh cinematic experience. With Leto’s ambitious take on Skeletor, the film aims to balance nostalgia with modern storytelling.
Release Date
Masters of the Universe will hit cinemas on June 5, 2026, promising fans a larger-than-life adventure filled with action, humor, and a reimagined battle between He-Man and Skeletor.
