Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away at a hospital in San Francisco, his family announced on Monday, December 16, 2024. He was 73 years old.

Hussain succumbed to complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a condition he had been battling. He had been hospitalized for the past two weeks and was later admitted to the ICU as his condition worsened.

Widely regarded as one of India’s most celebrated classical musicians, Hussain had a career that spanned six decades. He received numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards, with three awarded to him earlier this year at the 66th Grammy Awards.

Hussain collaborated with many renowned Indian and international artists throughout his illustrious career. His groundbreaking 1973 musical project with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionist T.H. ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram was a pioneering fusion of Indian classical music and jazz.

The legendary percussionist was honored with several of India’s highest civilian awards, including the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.

The news of his passing comes shortly after his recent tribute to his father, Ustad Alla Rakha, on the occasion of his 100th birth anniversary in Ahmedabad.
