Actress and singer Liza Minnelli is reflecting on her extraordinary life ahead of her 80th birthday. In a new interview with Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts, Minnelli discussed her memoir Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! My Memoir, co-written with longtime friend Michael Feinstein.

Born in Los Angeles in 1946 to Hollywood legends Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli, she grew up surrounded by fame. “The humor was everywhere, everywhere,” she recalled of her childhood home.

Career Highlights

Minnelli rose to prominence as a musical theater star, winning an Academy Award for her iconic role in Cabaret (1972). She also earned five Emmy nominations, three Tony Awards, and became a fixture in stage productions like Flora the Red Menace and Liza’s at The Palace.

Her career extended into television and film, with appearances in comedies such as Arrested Development and Sex and the City 2. Over the decades, her image has been referenced across pop culture, inspiring her decision to tell her story in her own words.

Family Struggles and Sobriety

Minnelli spoke candidly about her mother Judy Garland’s struggles with substance abuse and the pressures of Hollywood. “They kept mama working so hard. They had beat her up so badly,” she said, reflecting on Garland’s early fame in The Wizard of Oz.

Her memoir also addresses her own battles with addiction. In an excerpt shared with ABC News, she writes: “What began as a one-day blessing soon turned into a habit, then a full-blown case of addiction in the years ahead.” Minnelli notes that she continues to fight daily to keep the “disease” at bay.

Finding Peace at 80

As she approaches her milestone birthday on March 12, Minnelli says she has found “sweet peace” in quieter times. When asked how she plans to celebrate, she joked, “I don’t know. Let’s go to Disneyland.”

Feinstein praised her resilience, noting that her success was built on the hard work she witnessed from her parents. “Her fame and her having become an icon is not accidental,” he said. “It’s something she created through extraordinary hard work.”

Minnelli’s memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! My Memoir, is available now, offering fans a candid look at her life, career, and personal battles.
